Cyanotype on rice paper
These works recall family members and memories both remembered and forgotten. My parents immigrated before I was born, and I grew up oceans apart from my extended family. Using elements of sun, water, and time, family photos of uncles, aunties, grandparents and other extended relatives are reprinted on rice paper. For most of them, the most tangible evidence of our relationships are through these photos. Each time an image is reprinted, each time a memory is recalled, it loses some of its accuracy as the details become less distinct and the context become more obscured. Light passes through the paper as it becomes an increasingly imperfect and unreliable source of information, illuminating the space both before and after it. These works are about remembrance, loss, the fallibility of recollection as a way to reconnect and a desire to return home.
