TIDES: Remnants

Remnants: American Canning Company of Eastport

Rust dyed cotton. Found rusted steel, barnacles, and fishnet

2023

The abandoned ruins of the American Canning Company in Eastport, Maine. One of the last standing vestiges of a booming sardine canning industry. Using the rusty remnants of the wharf pillars supporting the ruins of the last American Canning Company building standing, left abandoned and slowly decaying into the sea.

Captivated by the bright orange iron oxide, the pigment leaching into the tidepools beneath the ruins, I wanted to capture the traces of industrial decay, representing the post-industrial economic death of the town. Felt as if I was looking both back in time and into the future as other industries boom and bust.

Ode to the Alewives

alewife scales, cyanotype, and stitched shibori dyed cotton

A series of experimental prints made in residence in honor of the annual alewife run, the upstream migration of hundreds of thousands of alewife fish from the ocean to their freshwater inland breeding reservoir.
